Developing a Symplicity™ program

Whether you have an existing hypertension program or not, creating a Symplicity™ program provides the framework needed to develop a successful and sustainable care pathway beyond the cath lab.

To establish a Symplicity™ program, we recommend completing the following actions:

  1. Identify a care team to support patient care before and after the procedure.
  2. Align on patient selection and screening.
  3. Determine medication titration plans pre- and post-procedure, if needed.
  4. Establish the best method for ongoing communications between proceduralists and referrers.
  5. Establish a post-procedure follow-up plan.
  6. Plan for when and how to market the program to referrers and patients.

Putting expert advice to practice

The 2023 SCAI position statement provides recommendations as you start to incorporate renal denervation into practice, including patient selection, operator competency, procedural training and techniques, and organizational recommendations.

Building a full-scale hypertension program

If you’re interested in going beyond a Symplicity™ program, we also have resources to help you build a hypertension program. The benefits of a hypertension program include optimizing the patient care pathway, improving blood pressure control rates, and reducing cardiovascular risk for hypertensive patients.1

To establish a hypertension program, we recommend completing the following actions:

  1. Identify a care team.
  2. Take the Target BP Practice Assessment and set hypertension program goals.
  3. Secure leadership support.
  4. Review electronic health records to understand your current uncontrolled hypertension patient population, the number of which are lost to follow-up, and the physician responsible for managing their care.
  5. Define the hypertension patient care process and how the Symplicity™ blood pressure procedure fits into that.
  6. Begin AHA hypertension certification application process, if desired.
  7. Communicate change plans internally and to referring physicians.
  8. Educate patients on the importance of hypertension management and share care offerings.
  9. Track metrics and ongoing program management.
