LEADING TECHNOLOGY, RESOURCES, AND SUPPORT
Explore important reasons to choose Medtronic deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy. We provide you with unparalleled resources and one-on-one support while you are deciding whether DBS is right for you. Our technology is designed to meet your needs now and into the future.
LEADING THE WAY IN DBS
Medtronic understands that DBS Therapy for Epilepsy is a big decision. And we want you to know that there is a reason Medtronic is one of the most trusted leaders in medical technology. We’ve been around a long time — we developed the first battery powered pacemaker for cardiac patients and led the development of deep brain stimulation in the 1980s and 1990s. And we do more clinical research on neuromodulation therapies than many other companies worldwide. All because we are driven by our Mission — to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life. We’re committed, and we’re here to help you explore how DBS Therapy for Epilepsy may improve your life.
DBS development started in 1987, and Medtronic has been leading the way ever since. So far, more than 150,000 Medtronic DBS devices have been implanted for several movement disorders and conditions. We are committed to making sure you have the information and support you need to decide whether Medtronic DBS therapy is right for you.
A Reason to be hopeful with DBS Therapy
Imagine living a fuller, more independent life. If you’re an adult suffering from partial-onset (focal) seizures that are uncontrolled by medications, DBS Therapy for Epilepsy may be an option for you.
Customized and Comfortable Control
Your doctor programs your DBS system to provide the best symptom control for you. As your symptoms change over time, the programming can be changed.
KEEP YOUR OPTIONS OPEN
Unlike some surgeries for epilepsy, deep brain stimulation is reversible. The system can be turned off or removed, and won't limit your future treatment options. With DBS, you can still take advantage of new epilepsy medications and treatments.
RIGOROUS TESTING FOR SAFE ACCESS TO MRI
Only Medtronic provides safe* access to MRI anywhere on the body with some systems under certain conditions — giving your doctor an important tool for diagnosis. We know it's important that you have safe access to MRI. That's why we performed rigorous testing of Medtronic DBS systems:
- 14 years of MRI research and testing
- 10 million simulated patient scans performed using 38,800 scan conditions such as patient size and patient position within the MRI machine
Some Medtronic DBS devices may remain on while you have an MRI. You may take comfort in knowing that the device can remain on (if programmed to the right settings) to control your symptoms. Talk with your doctor before having an MRI.
Related Content
Medtronic DBS systems are MR Conditional which means they are safe for MRI scans only under certain conditions. If the conditions are not met, the MRI could cause tissue heating especially at the implanted lead(s) in the brain which may result in serious and permanent injury or death. Before having an MRI, always talk with the doctor who manages your DBS Therapy to determine your eligibility and discuss potential benefits and risks of MRI.
