Best practices for programming replacement pumps

As a healthcare provider, you know that from time to time a patient on insulin pump therapy may receive a replacement insulin pump. However, as you also know, the new pump will not arrive pre-programmed with the patient’s basal rates or other verified settings such as Bolus WizardTM settings or sensor settings. These must be set up and saved on their pump prior to use. In the event a patient reaches out for help with programming their new replacement pump, we’ve outlined some important best practices and resources below to consider.

First, the patient should locate the settings for their pump, including basal rate settings, and consult with their healthcare professional (HCP) to verify these are the most recent settings.

Next, the patient may choose to program their insulin pump on their own with their verified settings. To do this, they can refer to the pump user guide for detailed instructions. However, at Medtronic, our goal is to provide the best-in-class support patients want to help them reach their therapy goals. With that in mind, if a patient has their settings but requires assistance programming their pump, they should contact Medtronic 24-Hour Technical Support at 1-800-646-4633, option 1.

We’ve also created resources that enable patients to not only keep track of their settings but also have access to step-by-step instructions for ease of programming. Our transfer of settings forms, along with other useful resources, can be accessed anytime here

Please note: For patients using 600 and 700 series insulin pumps, it is important to emphasize that during programming of their basal settings, they must make sure to respond to all pump screens to ensure their basal settings are saved. As shown in the screen sequence below, they must first scroll down to select “Done”, and then select “Save” on the following screen. The settings are successfully saved when the message “Changes saved” is shown on the screen. Additionally, as a best practice for trainers, it’s always a good idea to verify the settings have indeed been saved prior to training completion.
