Most new devices and leads are designed to be MR Conditional, which means specific conditions must be met to get an MRI. Before a heart device patient receives an MRI scan, doctors will verify that these conditions are met. Doctors will also verify that the system is functioning properly and monitor during the procedure to ensure safety.

Many people with an implantable heart device resume their normal daily activities after full recovery from surgery. However, there may be certain situations that your doctor will ask you to avoid. Your doctor will provide guidance for your particular condition.

Smartphones and their accessories may contain magnets and emit a small amount of electromagnetic interference (EMI), either of which could affect the normal operation of your device. For these reasons, it’s recommended you keep your smart devices at least 6 in (15 cm) away from your implanted heart device.

Traveling should be OK but be sure to follow a doctor’s instructions. A heart device monitors the heart regardless of location and provides treatment when needed.

If an implanted heart device triggers the security gates at airports or other secure buildings, present an implanted device ID card. If a security operator is using a handheld screening wand, ask the operator not to hold it directly over the heart device or to wave the wand back and forth. Returning to exercise is generally OK after a recovery period following the device procedure, but this should be discussed with a physician to develop a specific, individual plan.

A magnet can cause pacemakers to pace at a constant rate or cause defibrillators to withhold shocks. These effects are temporary and aren’t harmful to a heart device. Magnets can be found in many commonly used items such as wallets, purses, children’s toys, speakers, headphones, watch straps, and more.
