Overview

Many thyroid disorders are best treated with surgery. There are several types of thyroid surgery options and your surgeon will discuss which type of operation is best for you.

What Is Thyroid Surgery?

Traditional Surgery

Thyroid surgery is typically performed through an 2–8 cm incision (cut) in the skin of the lower part of the neck. The surgery is done under a general anesthetic and the surgeon removes all or part of the thyroid gland. The incision is usually made so that it falls in the fold of the skin in the neck, making it less visible.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

There are now alternatives to traditional surgery that are suitable for certain thyroid conditions. With minimally invasive surgery, the surgeon performs the operation through one or two very small incisions. Unlike the traditional method described above, the minimally invasive approach leaves only a tiny scar.
