We want to ensure that the DBS system for dystonia continues to function properly. Before the battery runs out, patients will need to replace the neurostimulator(s) of the DBS system through a surgical procedure. The DBS leads and extensions can typically stay in place and be reconnected to the new neurostimulator(s).
The clinician will closely monitor the performance and battery levels of the neurostimulator at each of the appointments. The patients programmer will alert them about three months before the battery runs out so they have plenty of time to plan for a replacement. Be sure to tell the clinician right away if you're experiencing any unusual symptoms, side effects, or changes in your condition.
Battery life depends on the programming settings.
