What’s the difference between a traditional pacemaker and a leadless pacemaker?

A traditional, or transvenous, pacemaker is a system that consists of the pacemaker and one or two leads. A traditional pacemaker is implanted in the upper chest and the leads are threaded into the heart where they are attached to the heart wall. A leadless pacemaker is much smaller, about the size of a large pill. It does not contain any leads and is implanted directly inside the heart itself.
