What’s the difference between a pacemaker and an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)?

A pacemaker treats a heart that is beating too slow, while an ICD treats a heart that is beating too fast. Most, but not all, ICDs also contain the ability to pace slow hearts, just like a pacemaker.
