Doctors will keep tabs on heart device battery life through regular follow-up office visits and/or with remote monitoring systems. Once a device is nearing replacement time, the clinic will reach out with necessary next steps. Additionally, some devices such as an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) or cardiac resynchronization with defibrillator (CRT-D) may play a tone when getting close to replacement time.
