Can security checkpoints such as those at airports, courthouses, concerts, or sporting events affect implanted heart devices?

Today's implanted heart devices are safe in a security environment. It is safe for you to go through airport, courthouse, or venue security systems without fear. Even so, it's a good idea to follow a few guidelines:

  1. Always carry your patient ID card just in case you set off a metal detector or security system.
  2. Minimize the risk of interference by not touching metal surfaces around screening equipment.
  3. When walking through a metal detector (archway), walk through at a normal pace. Don't stop under the archway, and don't touch or hug the archway.
  4. A millimeter wave or full body scanner (the kind that rotates around you) is safe to use. Use as instructed.
  5. If the security personnel would like to use a wand, that is okay. Just inform them that you have an implanted device and ask that they not wave the wand repeatedly over your device or hold it over your device for more than a few seconds. A couple of swipes over your device won't cause any problems.

If you have concerns about security screening methods, show your heart device ID card to the security operator and ask for an alternate screening method.
