Is DBS Therapy Right for You?

Essential Tremor

Medtronic Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Therapy for essential tremor is not right for everyone. Only a doctor experienced with DBS can determine if you are a candidate. Generally, the treatment is not recommended for people who have been recently diagnosed with essential tremor, or for those who are doing well on medications.

You may be a candidate if:

  • You have a tremor in an upper extremity due to essential tremor
  • It is causing significant disability
  • It cannot be treated adequately with medication
  • You are healthy enough to have this type of surgery

DBS may be right for you if:

  • You experience troubling side effects from medication, such as sleepiness, dizziness, or thinking problems
  • You have tried medications, but symptoms of essential tremor interfere with activities of daily living

If You Are a Candidate

If your doctor determines you are a candidate for DBS, you will need to make the final decision about whether or not to choose the treatment.

Here are some suggestions to help you decide whether DBS is right for you:

  • Request information from your doctor
  • Carefully weigh the benefits and risks of the treatment
  • Consider important safety information
  • Make sure you’re comfortable with your doctor. He or she should be helpful, supportive, and ready to answer any questions you may have
