LP Shunts

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH)

Overview

A lumboperitoneal (LP) shunt diverts cerebrospinal fluid from the spinal space in the lower back to the abdomen. It can be used to treat non-obstructive hydrocephalus, normal pressure hydrocephalus, elevated intracranial pressure, and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri).

Placement

The shunt is implanted into the spinal space in the lower back. The tubing is tunnelled under the skin to the abdomen and inserted into the abdominal cavity.
