Treatment Options for Spinal Fracture Spinal Fractures

Overview

Bed rest and medication may ease pain, but they don’t repair your spinal fracture. If you have been diagnosed with a spinal fracture caused by osteoporosis, cancer, or benign tumors, Medtronic has an innovative treatment option you may want to consider.

Conservative Care

Traditional treatment for back pain and/or spinal fractures might include several days of bed rest, pain medication, and infrequently, back bracing. Conservative treatment may reduce pain, but it does not repair or “set” the broken bone.

Balloon Kyphoplasty

When a patient has a broken bone, the goals of treatment include fixing the fracture and returning the bone to its correct anatomical position.

Kyphon® Balloon Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can repair fractured vertebrae in the spine, as well as reduce painful symptoms. The procedure is called balloon kyphoplasty because orthopedic balloons are used to lift the fractured bone in an attempt to return it to the correct anatomical position.
