Lumboperitoneal (LP) Shunts for Hydrocephalus

A lumboperitoneal (LP) shunt diverts cerebrospinal fluid from the spinal space in the lower back to the abdomen. It can be used to treat nonobstructive hydrocephalus, normal pressure hydrocephalus, elevated intracranial pressure, and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri).

Key Features

  • Nonmetallic design won’t be affected by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • Optional reservoir allows your doctor to sample cerebrospinal fluid and test shunt function.

Placement

The shunt is implanted into the spinal space in the lower back. The tubing is tunnelled under the skin to the abdomen and inserted into the abdominal cavity.
