Grafton™ Demineralised Bone Matrix (DBM) is an allograft tissue, which means it is from a human donor. A doctor may use this product alone or in combination with other grafting materials.
Grafton DBM has been processed in a manner that strips the natural mineral component away from the bone to expose native growth proteins. These native proteins produce a signal to the body to recruit bone forming cells to that area and form new bone. Grafton is used with existing local bone harvested at the surgical site. Using Grafton eliminates the need for a second surgical site to “harvest,” or remove surgically, bone from a person's body (”autogenous” bone) for placement at the oral surgery site. Autogenous bone harvest has the risk of pain, complications, longer surgical time and more anaesthesia.
