About the Therapy
Using a baclofen pump may help you to move and walk more easily, loosen overly tight muscles, and minimise spasticity-related pain. The surgically implanted pump continuously delivers medication to your spinal cord fluid.
A baclofen pump (ITB Therapy) is a precise, targeted therapy used to reduce severe spasticity caused by cerebral palsy. It uses a programmable, battery-powered medical device that stores and delivers a prescription medication called baclofen. The device is surgically implanted in the abdomen and a thin, flexible silicone tube called a catheter is inserted near the spine and connected to the pump.

More
Intrathecal baclofen therapy (ITB Therapy) is a treatment that may relieve some of the symptoms of severe spasticity.
Depending on your specific condition, ITB Therapy may impact your severe spasticity in different ways. Treatment may be even more effective when used in combination with physical, occupational, or speech therapy.
ITB therapy uses a surgically implanted programmable pump and catheter that delivers medication which helps relieve severe spasticity caused by cerebral palsy. This medication is a liquid form of baclofen that goes directly into the intrathecal space where fluid flows around the spinal cord.
Because baclofen is delivered directly to where it’s needed most, in the intrathecal space of the spinal cord, it relieves spasticity with smaller amounts of medication than when baclofen is taken orally. This method of delivery may help minimise side effects that can result from oral baclofen.
The system consists of:
A programmable baclofen pump system includes a programmable pump and catheter that are surgically placed, usually just under the skin of the abdomen. The system delivers a liquid form of the drug baclofen directly to the fluid around the spinal cord, where it's needed most.
People report that the programmable pump is not uncomfortable or restrictive, and does not interfere with their movement. Depending on your body type, it may not show at all under regular clothes.
Because the drug is delivered directly to where it is needed in the spinal fluid, only minimal amounts circulate throughout the body in the blood. This helps minimise the possible side effects that can accompany oral baclofen.
While a baclofen pump (ITB therapy) won't eliminate the primary source of your condition or cure your disease, it may help you manage your severe spasticity symptoms and might allow you to participate in daily activities that have become difficult or impossible.
Candidates for a baclofen pump (ITB therapy) must:
