Will magnets affect an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)?
Yes, however, ICDs are specifically designed to interact safely with magnets. A magnet causes the ICD to temporarily change programming modes while the magnet is directly over the ICD. Once the magnet is moved the ICD switches back to its normal programmed settings. This feature is typically used by a doctor, but should be avoided in your daily life. For this reason, keep any items containing magnets at least six inches (15 cm) away from the ICD. Consult the ICD’s manufacturer for additional information and recommendations.
