What is an abnormal heartbeat?

An abnormal heartbeat, or an arrhythmia, is an irregular heartbeat. That means the heart may be beating faster, slower, or off rhythm compared to a normal heart. An arrhythmia means there is a problem with the electrical signals in the heart. These signals travel through the heart to make it contract, or beat in a rhythm. If the heart is not in rhythm, it may need treatment.
